Crane selection - This is often difficult, however time spent analysing your requirements can save you a lot of time and money later. A few basic questions to ask are:
How frequently will the crane be used?
What temperatures will the Crane be used in?
What is the heaviest load the Crane needs to move?
Is the heaviest load infrequent and if so is there another way (rollers, etc)?
Does the Crane need 4 axis of movement (north-south, east to west)?
Does the Crane need 2 speed of hoisting (creep for setting down, fast for clearing)?
Does the Crane operate in hazardous areas?

This type of crane runs on an elevated runway system along the length of the factory or working environment. Bridge Cranes are available in Single girder (MONO) or double girder (DUAL). Double girder is more suited to larger spans.
This type of crane is similar to the bridge crane and includes legs at both sides to floor mounted rails. The gantry
crane shares the same performance as the bridge
crane and is a little heavier, however it may be more
convenient for the rails on ground (or deck mounted).

This type of Crane mounts on the underside of the Crain rail and has 2 axis of movement only (along the rail). This is often the most cost effective solution (being low cost, light and maintenance friendly). The monorail hoists can lift using chain or wire rope

In the last years BOP Stacks for use on dynamic drilling vessels, have grown considerably. This includes the mass of the BOP stack, and also the heights and girth have increased. In addition to this safety and maintenance requirements have increased. This means that the equipment handling the BOP stacks have needed larger SWL’s (Safe Working Loads).
In existing dynamic vessels it could also mean that structural modifications are required in the moonpool area, and in some cases the Drillfloor itself has to be raised.
The level of mechanisation will be increased to improve safety.
